Karungkarni Art And Culture

Lot 65 Buntine Highway, Kalkarindji, NT, 0852
0427 177 779

Karungkarni Art Centre is the cultural heart of Kalkaringi, a remote Aboriginal community located 480km southwest of Katherine in the upper Victoria River District of the Northern Territory. Our Art Centre serves to pass on knowledge from old to young; to maintain and revitalise language; to facilitate the protection of artists’ intellectual and cultural property; and to share our art and culture with the wider world. Here innovation and creativity flourish to keep Gurindji art, language and culture strong. Karungkarni is a not-for-profit organisation, proudly owned and governed by the artists of Kalkarindji and Daguragu.

Our founding artists are renowned for their participation in the Wave Hill Walk Off on 23 August 1966, when Vincent Lingiari led our people from Wave Hill Cattle Station, igniting the birth of Aboriginal Land Rights. Our Art Centre continues the legacy of those courageous and visionary men and women. They form the core of our enterprise, which provides economic and cultural benefits for the artists, families and community. Their artwork is a distinctive and genuine expression of traditional stories of Gurindji people.

Provenance: We guarantee that each artwork is an authentic Aboriginal artwork. The artwork is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity, which includes the artist’s biography, artwork catalogue number and painting narrative.

Copyright: Copyright for the artwork and artwork image remains with the artist unless otherwise negotiated.
