Karungkarni Art And Culture

Rosemary Johnson Namitja is a Warlpiri/ Gurindji/ Warramunga artist and former director of Karungkarni Art Centre.
Rosemary was born in 1962 on Old Wavehill Station (Jinparrak) and later grew up at Cattle Creek Station. As she grew older, she lived with her jaju (father’s mother) in Lajamanu who sent Rosemary to Yirara College in Alice Springs, so that she could gain a good education. Rosemary was a three-year-old girl at the time of the Wave Hill Walk Off and was carried by her older sister as they walked to Victoria River. After the Walk Off, her parents moved to Lajamanu, and then later moved back to Kalkaringi Welfare Settlement where she has remained. She occasionally works as an English/Gurindji translator. Rosemary loves to pass on cultural knowledge to the younger generations.
