This painting by Debra Vincent Nangala depicts a favourite food of Gurindji people – witchetty grubs. This variety are found in the underground roots of a small shrub which is often sought after by people as they travel along the Kalkarindji to Lajamanu Road.

There are three types of witchetty grubs. One is on the trunk of the tree and the others are in the roots – one is a small plant growing in the red sandy arid regions and is easily pulled out of the ground. The grubs come up with the roots when the ground is soft after the wet season. Witchetty grubs are spotted by looking for the entrance hole with associated dust and kuru (excrement) on the trunk and branches. The wood is then chopped above the hole to widen it and the grub pulled out with a fine piece of wire or hooked stick.
