Artist, Serena Donald Nimarra, is the daughter of painter and storyteller Violet Wadrill. She grew up at Daguragu with her 9 brothers and sisters and later went to school in Alice Springs. Serena is Malngin and Gurindji. Her kaku (father’s father) country is on Riveren (Kurlungurru) and Inverway stations. Serena studied Certificate 3 and 4 in Media at Batchelor Institute and won the Harry Wilson Memorial Award for media and radio. She worked on the Central Land Council (CLC) Indigenous Ecological Knowledge project, which produced an animation of the Rainbow Serpent story as told by her mother. She has also worked as a ranger with CLC’s Murnkurrumurnkurru Rangers and edited Mungku (The Little Turtle), a video on her mother’s telling of a Dreamtime story about the Mungku, the Rainbow Serpent’s messenger. Serena has assisted with translating stories, and also co-delivered a Gurindji reading and writing workshop for members of the Gurindji-speaking community.
