We grew up at the beach and its where I learned much of our Kokoberrin culture and lore, so it features in my artworks. All the generations would gather down at the beach. My grandmother and mother would teach us kids how to find pipi shells just above the water line. We’d all stand together and do the pipi shuffle. “Its like a dance” grannie would say, as we shuffled our feet into the wet sand and waited for the sea to wash over our feet and ankles. Soon we could feel the pipis under our feet, and we would gather them up in baskets to cook and eat later by the fire. As a child I remember looking closely at the pipi shells and seeing their intricate banded patterns of cream and pale brown with rainbow streaks of yellow-green and pink. This artwork reminds me of the importance of staying grounded and spending time on Country learning our culture and keeping Kokoberrin traditions alive.
