Katrina McKinnon

Katrina McKinnon is a prolific artist who paints in the Waralungku studio almost every day. She has a strong connection to cultural stories, but also combines this with her own contemporary interpretation of colour and composition.

Katrina is both a Marra and a Yanyuwa (saltwater) woman, but also connects strongly to the rivers in the region, referring often to them in her painted stories.

Born in Gore Nhulunbuy in Arnhem Land, but living in Borroloola for her whole life, Katrina belongs to a large extended clan group. Her family also have traditional homelands in the Sir Edward Pellow Islands, which is her Yanyuwa  fathers country.

Katrina comes from a family of creative people, with her Marra mother being a highly respected teacher of Pandanus weaving in the 1970’s and her daughter currently an emerging artist at Waralungku Arts as well.

Katrina loves to paint about her country and the things which are essential to the environment, culture and the sustenance of life.
