Murrgan Valma (Blue Quandong) design Yalma (cross boomerang)

Blue Quangong (E/aeocarpus angustifolius) trees were an important resource for Vidinji people. Their large unique shields could be cut from the buttress flange. The ashes could be mixed with Jilibura (green ant) juice to make medicine.

Anning first gained inspiration from historical Yidinji Big-uun (shields), Yalma (cross boomerangs) and Nalan Gugal (Firemakers) and was the foremost Indigenous artist to revive the unique tradition in 1989. His designs on yalma, shields and firemakers are imbued with up to seven different ochre colours found on Yidinji country, to depict totemic designs that demonstrate cultural continuity. His works are held in both public and private collections across Australia.
