Maicie Lalara
Anindilyawka ArtsMaicie Lalara is an experience and skilled artist and Project Officer at Anindilyakwa Arts from Umbakumba community, who enjoys sharing her culture and skills with diverse audiences, in person and recently through online workshops.
Maicie has receiving National recognition, including as a finalist in the Ravenswood Women’s Art Prize with her series of three baskets ‘Gathering Family – Father, Mother and Baby Basket’
I do it all night, maybe until the morning. I don’t sleep, because I like making the baskets and Monster Fish so much. It is important for me for the future so I can show people my culture and how we still make baskets in different ways, both ways, the new ways and old ways.
In 2019, Maicie participated in the Asialink Arts residency program in Indonesia where she delivered workshops and developed new works , including her celebrated ‘ Yilkwa- Monster Fish’ . A large menacing fish hand woven from marine debris, including ghost net, lighters and bottle tops, this work is currently on tour in the Artback exhibition “ Groundswell”’. A series of her smaller Monster Fish have recently been acquired by the Museum de Havre in France.
Maicie’s digital printed fabrics featuring her woven ‘Monsterfish’ made their debut on the catwalk in a special catwalk event at Anindilyakwa Arts for VIP guests in August 2020, then in Darwin and Melbourne for the 2020 ‘ From Country to Couture’ fashion shows.
