Josephine James was born in Amata in the APY lands. When she was growing up she spent time in the Art centre, Tjala arts watching her Kami/Grandmother Paint. When she was older, while she was working as an Anangu Educator, Her kami Katanari Tjilya Burton taught her how to make Tjanpi/weaving. She then Taught her how to paint canvas.  Her fathers side of the family is from Raminginig, her antie woks at the art centre there, Bula Bula Arts.

Now she is working in the Iwiri Studio.
