Josephine Burak

Munupi Arts And Craft

“At school art was my favorite subject”. Josephine Burak is the daughter of respected custodian of traditional medical knowledge, Lydia Burak. Having gained her mother’s carving skills, Josephine Burak often prepares her own pwoja (comb, painting tool) to shape it to her exact needs. Josephine Burak’s subject will often be the significant Kulama Ceremony, though her designs are also wonderfully reminiscent of astronomic star charts.

A committed artist, Josephine has been in previous years one the director of the Art Centre. Josephine is currently employed by the Art Centre and contributes significantly to the day-to-day management of the operations of the Art Centre.
