Jane Mervin

Bindi Mwerre Anthurre Artists

Jane came from Amata Community, SA, to Alice Springs in the early 2000s and for three years she studied at Batchelor College, receiving a Certificate II in Arts and Craft. From 2011 – 2020 Jane painted with the Bindi Mwerre Anthurre Artists.

She painted predominantly birds (tjulpu), executed with a playful use of texture, colour and story. Jane’s joyful affinity with the tjulpu spoke of her connection to community and country.

Referring to her favourite subject, Owls, Jane said “At night time the owls come in to visit. I can hear them, I look for them. I see the owl and the moon and then I go to sleep.”

She drew inspiration from her memories of life in Amata and images from the books she kept on her desk to create texture rich canvases and elaborate works on paper. Janes’ gentle soul and quirky brand of humour were evident in all she did.

Passionate about teaching her language, Pitjantjatjara, to the Studio Staff and fellow artists, Jane was key in cultivating the exchange of knowledge and stories that transpire within the studio on a daily basis.

Jane passed away in 2022.
