Hi, my name is David Roy Smith and I am a Wonaruah man born in Newcastle to an Aboriginal father of the Wonaruah people and an English mother. I have enjoyed a large and close-knit extended family and much of my work is influenced on everything provided and left for us to learn from by our ancestors before us.

Growing up in Toronto in Newcastle I was lucky enough to have Lake Macquarie at my front doorstep, the beautiful Watagan mountains and bushland in my backyard and the beautiful Pacific Ocean only short ride away.

In my artwork I have to say is all that God has placed inside my heart so that through my painting I am able to bring out fantastic pieces of artwork, and it’s through this blessing that I am encouraged to learn more and more each time about everything our ancestors before us left for us to learn and experience.
