Binyural #2 Yununpiŋu

Buku Larrnŋgay Mulka

Binyural’s Märi’s place is called Gurrumurru. Although she grew up in Yirrkala, she learned weaving in Dhalinybuy, through her aunties, sister in laws, Grandmother, and through her Mum. Since she was small, she was always watching them weaving and as soon as she was old enough she started to help out. She learned not only how to weave but also how to harvest the Gunga (Pandanus) and where and how to get the right plants and roots for dying the colour.

In 1970, when the craft shop started, she also started collecting Yiriŋaniŋ (red bean tree seeds) for making necklaces. Today, her daughter Buwanana makes a lot of Yiriŋaniŋ necklaces.
