Alice Durilla

Anindilyawka Arts

Alice was born and grew up in Angurugu. When she was young she would watch her father paint. Alice’s sister learnt to paint from her husband and her father.

Alice paints on canvas with acrylic and painted for a long time with her husband – the late Alfred Lalara. Together, they painted using traditional Groote Eylandt dash work in ochre and paint.

Alice is also a weaver, working with natural materials such as mangkurrkwa (pandanus) and natural dyes as well as recycled ghost nets and textiles. Alice creates contemporary fashion pieces and looks for the annual Anindilyakwa Arts fashion collection using a range of traditional knowledge in bush dyes and weavings as well as screen printed and digital printed designs.
